The Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering seeks to fill the following vacancy at:

Research Assistant, PhD candidate (m/f/d) Mechanical Process Engineering

Salary scale:
13 TV-L
Date commencing: Summer / Fall 2024
Fixed term:
3 years
Contract status:
100 %

We are a university with a focus on engineering and natural sciences as well as economics, human sciences and medicine. We offer excellent study and working conditions to 13,000 students from Germany and abroad as well as approx. 3,000 employees.

At the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering (www.mvt.ovgu.de) we are a group of enthusiastic researchers with intensive research activities in the numerical modelling of multiphase flows. As part of our research on particle-laden flows, we study the complex behaviour of dispersed particles in incompressible and compressible turbulent flows, particle-turbulence interactions, the influence of particle shape as well as applications featuring particle-laden flows.

The objective of the advertised position is to develop novel computational models to describe particle-laden flows where the particles have complex shapes. This will include performing detailed numerical studies with our in-house CFD code using direct numerical simulation (DNS) of flows with particles, as well as the development of a new model to describe the inter-particle and particle-flow interactions. The new model will then be implemented in our in-house CFD code to simulate the transport of particles in flows at larger scales.

With this position, you do not only have the opportunity to obtain a PhD, but also build a professional network in the scientific community and relevant industries.

Job description:

  • Design, execution and analysis of analytical and numerical studies of the behaviour of particles in fluid flows
  • Derivation, implementation and analysis of models to predict the behaviour of many particles in flows
  • Participation in the development of our in-house simulation tools in C and with MPI

Requirements profile:

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aeronautical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline
  • Track record in working with physical models and numerical methods
  • Experience with coding (e.g. C, C++, Fortran or Python) is highly desirable
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics, especially of direct numerical simulations or discrete element methods, is desirable
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English is required
