At the Chair of Computational Intelligence of the Faculty of Computer Science (, we work on methodologies of computational intelligence with special focus on evolutionary algorithms, multi-objective optimization, swarm intelligence and their application on engineering and robotics.

At the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering of the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering ( we are a group of enthusiastic researchers with intensive research activities in the numerical modelling of multiphase flows. As part of our research on particle-laden flows, we study the complex behaviour of dispersed particles in incompressible and compressible turbulent flows, particle-turbulence interactions, the influence of particle shape as well as applications featuring particle-laden flows.

The objective of the advertised position is to develop new control strategies for dense particle-laden flows (e.g. fluidized beds) with the help of Genetic Programming, a machine learning technique belonging to the family of Evolutionary Algorithms. In this multidisciplinary research project, you will combine simulations and small-scale experiments of dense particle-laden flows with state-of-the-art methodologies from machine learning. Your tasks will include the conduct of multiphase flow simulations, carrying out small-scale experiments, and developing and analyzing the models generated with Genetic Programming, to control the behavior of dense particle-laden flows. This project is part of the DFG Priority Program (SPP) 2364, “Autonomous Processes in Particle Technology”. The Research Assistant is expected to write a PhD thesis based on this work.

Your primary responsibilities:

  • Design, execution, and analysis of small-scale numerical studies and experiments of dense particle-laden flows
  • Development and implementation of a Evolutionary Algorithms to control the dense particle-laden flows
  • Implementation and application of the generated models to the control the behaviour of dense particle-laden flows, e.g., fluidized beds
  • Cooperation with our collaborators and researchers within the research centre and program

Your profile:

  • MSc degree or equivalent in computer science, mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline
  • Proven track record in working with physical problems and machine learning
  • Proven coding experience in C, C++, Python, or Fortran
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics, mathematical optimization, or machine learning is highly desirable
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English is required
