In our new laboratory for micro systems engineering for medial engineering, we have an opening for a scientific employee in the area of micro actuators. The general objective of the position is to investigate novel fundamental working principles, e.g., miniaturized linear actuators, biomechanically inspired elastomer actuators or ultrasound-driven actuators. Potential applications include optomechatronics, medical engineering or micro fluidics. The position includes also related fabrication and characterization methods, such as dynamic surface profilometry and laser structuring. The early integration of students our research through research assistanceships and final projects is a central part of our teaching philosophy.

Main responsibilities:

• Conceptualization, analytical estimation, simulation, fabrication and characterization of novel actuation concepts
• Setup of fabrication and characterization setups
• Supervision of students as part of the research
• Contribution to teaching (4 SWS)

Your profile:

You have a broad technical and physical knowledge and intuition; you enjoy investigating and realizing new ideas and are enthusiastic to deepen your understanding. You are ambitious, technological challenges motivate you, but you are also open for new ideas and to learn from others.

• Master’s degree or equivalent in engineering or natural sciences, in particular micro systems, precision engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics or a related discipline (e.g., electrical engineering or physics); Ph.D. is optional but not mandatory
  
• Good intuition for basic physical and mechanical concepts and their approximate analytical estimate
• Good comprehensive practical laboratory skills including the design of experimental setups and data analysis but also precision fabrication of prototypes
• Basic knowledge of control-, data analysis- and simulation software. Good skills to independently develop and transfer further skills and knowledge. Advanced knowledge is of advantage, but not required.
• Knowledge of actuators, piezoelectric and electroactive materials or ultrasound are of advantage but not required
• Fluency in English or German with at least reliable technical communication in English
