The Faculty of Natural Sciences seeks to fill the following vacancy at the Department for Soft Matter -in subject to the allocation of funds-:

Postgraduate training fellowship leading to the award of a PhD in Marie S.-Curie Project UCOM,
Cavitation in Soft Materials

The position is part of the Marie S. Curie innovative training network “UCOM: Cavitation in Soft Materials” and will focus on the dynamics of bubbles and softmatter for medical applications such as non-thermal ablation, wound healing, or cancer therapy. The position is subject to the approval of funding.

The postgraduate study is focused on the creation of cavitation in soft matter. The aim is to understand where and how cavitation occurs in biological cells, lipid vesicles, and other cell mimicking phantoms.

The main responsibilities are:

  • Design and set-up of experiments
  • Conduct high-speed photographic studies using pulsed lasers, microscopy, cell cultivation, growth of lipid vesicles, and analysis of the experimental data
  • Participate at the activities of the Innovative Training Network (MSC/ITN)

Requirements for the position:

  • A candidate is sought that is highly motivated, reliable and able to work independently
  • The successful candidate will have an MSc or equivalent degree (or be currently working towards one) in physics, electrical or mechanical engineering or a related field
  • Excellent experimental and good programming skills
  • Interest in fluid mechanics, biomedical questions, and image processing to name a few
  • Experience with pulsed lasers is highly desirable, but not a requirement.
  • Good communication skills (written and orally) are essential
  • The candidate must also fulfil the eligibility requirements:
    - no PhD
    - Master Degree or equivalent (at date of recruitment)
    - less than 4 years research experience (less than 4 years since they received the degree that gave them access to doctoral studies)
    - not lived or worked in the country of their host institution for more than 12 months in the last 3 years
    - no restriction on nationality
