We are a university with a focus on engineering and natural sciences as well as economics, human sciences and medicine. We offer excellent study and working conditions to 13,000 students from Germany and abroad as well as approx. 3,000 employees.

The Chair of Sensory Physiology, Kristine Krug, at the OVGU Magdeburg investigates the neural basis of perceptual decision-making in primates. We interrogate the relationship between neurons, circuits and behaviour in Rhesus monkeys and humans with methods including cellular neurophysiology, high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7T and cutting-edge brain intervention methods, including microstimulation, optogenetics, chemogenetics und transcranial focused ultrasound.

We seek a postdoctoral scientist to collaborate on developing innovative methods and driving research investigating the neural basis of visual decision-making and cognition. The successful candidate will be able to conduct research utilizing optogenetic and chemogenetic modulation of activity in Rhesus monkeys, MRI and high-dimensional and multi-site neurophysiological recordings to determine the neural codes for perceiving and making decisions about naturalistic, dynamically changing visual objects and scenes. Bridging techniques high resolution MRI at 7T, PET-MRI and transcranial focused ultrasound allow the comparison of coding principles between monkeys and humans. This post offers the opportunity to develop one’s own research profile as a junior group leader.

Main responsibilities:

  • to investigate the neural basis of perceptual decision-making and visual cognition in non-human primates
  • to determine the direct contribution of specific circuit elements to perceptual decisions through optogenetic and chemogenetic modulation as well as transcranial focused ultrasound
  • to compare perceptual coding between human and non-human species using high-field MRI
  • to collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team taking responsibility for research progress and research reporting, presentations at scientific meetings etc.
  • to write grants, co-supervise students and develop own research
  • to contribute to the development of methodology, the conduct of animal experiments in the laboratory and the fostering of international collaborations
  • to contribute to teaching biomedical and advanced neuroscience students (4 semester hours per week; mentoring will be provided)

Requirements for the position:

  • a Master's degree and a PhD in neuroscience, medicine, or another natural science and a strong quantitative background
  • high-level experience with mammalian behaviour, neurophysiology, MRI, focused ultrasound, opto- and chemogenetics, in particular with non-human primates
  • experience in computational modelling or programming, e.g. with MATLAB or Python, and in statistical methods
  • an emerging track record in scientific publishing, funding acquisition and teaching
  • experience in the supervision of students
  • excellent language skills in English (German language skills are welcome but not essential)
  • confidence and motivation to develop own research profile as a junior group leader in the department

This is a fixed term post, initially for three years, but can be potentially extended. If you have questions about the advertised position, please contact Prof. Kristine Krug (kristine.krug(at)ovgu.de or 0391 67 55067). For further information about the research group, please see www.lisp.ovgu.de.
