Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of Biomass Gasification and Particle Separation (PostDoc)

In this research project supported the frame of an EU Horizon project with the title “Numerical modelling and simulation of particle separation from syngas in biomass gasification” it is intended to develop a predictive numerical tool for analysing the particle-laden hot gas stream of a biomass gasification plant including the particle separation and gas cleaning unit on the basis of code library OpenFOAM.

Job description:

The project incorporates the following tasks:

  • LES-Euler/Lagrange computations for particle-laden hot flue gas with sub-grid-scale (SGS) models for turbulence and turbulent heat flux and modelling of SGS effects (velocity and temperature) on particle behaviour
  • Extension of the Lagrangian approach for dealing with particles of different size, shape and properties in the flue gas (hot gas), such as char and ash particles
  • Validation of the computations based on experiments obtained by the project partners and optimization studies related to the biomass gasification process
  • Development of novel separation concepts for example based on thermophoresis

Requirements profile:

  • Completed scientific University education with a Diploma or Master and Phd degree in the field of Engineering or Physics
  • Knowledge in the area of complex particle-laden multiphase flows considering various kinds of non-spherical particles in a hot gas stream
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics and the usage of OpenFOAM, specifically with regards to particle-laden flow processes (essential requirement)
  • Good English language skills (B2 level)
