At the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering (http://www.mvt.ovgu.de) we are a group of enthusiastic researchers with intensive research activities in the numerical modelling of multiphase flows. As part of our research on particle-laden flows, we study the complex behaviour of dispersed particles in incompressible and compressible turbulent flows, particle-particle and particle-turbulence interactions, the influence of particle shape as well as applications featuring particle-laden turbulent flows. Currently, there are approximately 8 PhD students and 3 post-docs working at the Chair in the area.

The objective of this advertised position is to study the behavior of interacting particles in turbulence, and develop models to study the agglomeration and deagglomeration behavior of these particles using machine learning. The application area of the modelling is the particulate flow behavior in dry powder inhalers. The position is part of the newly established Marie S. Curie doctoral network SCALE, “Industry empowerment to Multiphase fluid dynamics simulations using Artificial intelligence and Statistical methods on modern hardware architectures at Scale”, with collaboration partners in Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The successful applicant is expected to write a PhD thesis based on this work, which will be supported accordingly from our side.

Your primary responsibilities:

  • Derivation of mathematical and physical models to describe the agglomeration dynamics of particles in a turbulent flow.
  • The application of machine learning techniques to describe agglomeration dynamics of particles.
  • Carrying out of detailed simulations of gas-particle flows in dry powder inhalers.
  • Participation in the development of our in-house simulation tools in the C programming language.
  • Secondment and collaboration with an industrial partner (Astra Zeneca).
  • Cooperation with our collaborators and researchers within the Doctoral Network.

Requirements profile:

  • MSc degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline.
  • Proven track record in working with physical problems and numerical methods.
  • A strong interest in computational fluid dynamics.
  • Coding experience in C, C++, Fortran or Python in the context of numerical modelling is highly desirable.
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English is required.
  • You must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.

The successful candidates will receive a salary including mobility and family allowance (if applicable) and will be employed according to the rules for Doctoral Candidates (DCs) in a EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network and the specific regulations of each institution.

Gross salary without employer´s social contribution and without family allowance:

The employee’s gross salary will be approximately 3269 € per month (without family allowance) or approximately
3816 € per month (with family allowance), depending on the year of employment and the choice of health insurance. A family allowance will be paid in case the researcher has a family. ‘Family’ means persons linked to the researcher by marriage (or a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the legislation of the country where this relationship was formalised) or dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher.
