The Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering seeks to fill the following vacancy at the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering:

Research Assistant (PhD candidate)

Salary Scale:
13 TV-L
Date commencing:
next possible date
Fixed term until:
3 years
Contract status:
100 %

At the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering (http://www.mvt.ovgu.de) we are a group of enthusiastic researchers with intensive research activities in the numerical modelling of multiphase flows. As part of our research on particle-laden flows, we study the complex behaviour of dispersed particles in incompressible and compressible turbulent flows, particle-turbulence interactions, the influence of particle shape as well as applications featuring particle-laden flows.

The objective of the advertised position is to develop computational models to describe dense particle-laden flows. This will include conducting systematic numerical studies using our in-house CFD code using direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent flows with small particles, as well as the development of a new model to describe the interactions of the particles with the fluid flow.

The Research Assistant is expected to write a PhD thesis based on this work.

Your primary responsibilities:

  • Design, execution and analysis of analytical and numerical studies of the behaviour of particles in fluid flows
  • Derivation, implementation and analysis of models to predict the behaviour of many particles in flows
  • Participation in the development of our in-house simulation tools in C and with MPI

Your profile:

  • Master degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aeronautical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline
  • Proven track record in working with physical problems and numerical methods
  • Proven coding experience in C, C++ or Fortran in the context of numerical modelling
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics, especially of direct numerical simulations and/or large eddy simulations, is highly desirable
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English is required

For further information about the position, please contact Prof. Berend van Wachem by email, berend.vanwachem(at)ovgu.de.

Applications from disabled persons will be given priority in the case of equal suitability, ability and professional expertise. The Otto von Guericke University aims to increase the proportion of women researchers within the university and specifically encourages women to apply.
