We are a university with a focus on engineering and natural sciences as well as economics, human sciences and medicine. We offer excellent study and working conditions to 13,000 students from Germany and abroad as well as approx. 3,000 employees.

We seek for a highly motivated PhD Candidate in the newly established interdisciplinary Graduate School Program “Navigating the Chaos of Innovation and Transformation” (NACHOS), funded by the state Sachsen-Anhalt and the ESF+. The program investigates how technological and digital innovations are managed and implemented in different spheres of society and what conflicts arise in the process. It aims, among other things, to provide impulses for new forms of work, processes and organizational forms, as well as measures to promote the acceptance of (smart) technologies. The focus is particularly on an interdisciplinary approach in which researchers and young scientists from the social and economic sciences work closely together.

Job description:

  • Your research will be on the role of profit-oriented companies for social innovation. Possible topics cover employees’ work motivation and creativity or the acceptance of consumers. However, you are also encouraged to develop and execute your own research projects.
  • Methodologically, the research will be based on behavioral and experimental economics, i.e. you will be conducting own surveys and experiments.
  • You will be pursuing a PhD in a structured graduate program with diverse thematic courses and research colloquia with an interdisciplinary team.
  • The graduate program offers strong mentoring, funding for conference visits and international summer school participation as well as demand-tailored doctoral and career training.
  • You will be embedded not only in the team of the graduate program, but also in the multinational team of the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) given the academic affiliation of your supervisor (see below).

Requirements profile:

  • You have a high-quality master degree in economics, or otherwise adjacent fields, and experience in the analysis of microdata.
  • Optimally, you have basic knowledge in experimental economics and/or programming skills.
  • You are curious, creative, and highly motivated to research behavioral patterns. Your working methods are self-responsible and structured. Organizational talent as well as team orientation and proficiency in English round off your profile.
  • You are open to get in touch with the national and international scientific community and to cooperate with your graduate program fellows and other researchers from the OvGU and IWH. The latter requires mobility between the (well-connected) cities of Magdeburg and Halle.
