Research Associate (m/f/d)
in the DFG Collaborative Research Center “Bulk Reaction”, focusing on understanding the interaction of granular assemblies with flows

At the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering ( we are a group of enthusiastic researchers with intensive research activities in the numerical modelling of multiphase flows, including interfacial and particle-laden flows. . As part of our research on particle-laden flows, we study the complex behaviour of dispersed particles in incompressible and compressible turbulent flows, particle-turbulence interactions, the influence of particle shape as well as applications featuring particle-laden flows.

The objective of the advertised position is to develop novel computational models to describe dense particle-laden flows. This will include conducting systematic numerical studies with our in-house CFD code using direct numerical simulation (DNS) of flows with particles, as well as the development of a new model to describe the interactions of the particles with the fluid flow. The new model will then be used to describe the interaction of a flow with particles at large scales.

This project is part of the DFG Collaborative Research Center “Bulk Reaction”, focusing on understanding the interaction of granular assemblies with flows.

Your primary responsibilities:

  • Design, execution and analysis of analytical and numerical studies of the behaviour of particles in fluid flows
  • Derivation, implementation and analysis of models to predict the behaviour of many particles in flows
  • Participation in the development of our in-house simulation tools in C and with MPI

Requirements for the position:

  • MSc degree or equivalent  and PhD degree in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aeronautical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline
  • Proven track record in working with physical problems and numerical methods
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics, especially of direct numerical simulations and/or large eddy simulations, is highly desirable
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English is required
